Sewing Fiasco

DSC_1274

Somehow this project was a failure from the start. I had the idea to sew the little one and myself a matching sailor outfit. A shirt and shorts for him and a dress for me. I had this cute boy's sailor shirt pattern for ages. It was the first Ottobre magazine I ever bought. For myself I had planned a 50s style dress with a simple sailor collar. So where did everything go wrong?

First the fabric I ordered was a far lighter blue than I wanted. On my screen it looked much darker and so I was a bit disappointed when it arrived. But well, I did not want to order more fabric from overseas and my local fabric store has not so many nice cottons, so wanted to work with what I had.

So I traced the patterns, constructed a sailor collar for myself with the help of a vintage pattern and began cutting the fabric. Somehow I really did not think enough about pattern placement, because of course I had problems that I did not have enough fabric. And it was all my fault because I made some stupid decisions while cutting. But well, in the end I had cut out all pattern pieces and could begin sewing.

Next my overlock machine hated me for ten minutes and I had to fumble with all the threads, but that was a minor problem. The shorts were easy to sew. It was very basic and I had no problems with it at all (okay, except that the waistband did not fit entirely on the pants, but that was an easy fix). So then I began sewing my dress and the shirt. For the dress I used a pattern from Gertie's Ultimate Dress Book. The designs in this book are amazing and I will do a review about it hopefully soon.

For the collars I wanted to sew on some white stripes. But of course I had no ribbon on hand and neither did I have a blue zipper. Ok, so a trip to the fabric store was necessary. The ribbon hated me and so I skipped it. Solid blue collar? Why not?
Somehow I was able to mess up the collar placement of the boy's shirt and of course only realized it, when I already finished the neckband. The collar on my dress looked also a bit strange, but not horrible. But when I tried on the top of the dress it was far too small in the waist, although I fit the measurements exactly. I let out some widths of the darts, which was okay.

So at this point I was a bit exhausted and unnerved, but had the will to go on. But then came the final straw. When I had sewed on the sleeves of the dress it did not fit at all. The arm holes are way to small. I have no big arms, so I do not understand, how this could happen. After I discovered this, I gave up. I was just tired of this project and had no desire to make all the fixes necessary. So I am honest, I put almost everything in the trash. Only the shorts and the skirt pieces are still alive. At least the shorts are wearable and I guess I can make something out of the skirt pieces (although it is not my color at all). I am not sure what I will do with the Gertie patterns. The projects in this book are really cute and maybe I will fix the patterns, so that I can make some of them. Because I really love the concept of this book.

So as you can see, even after years of sewing, sometimes things will not work out in the end. But to end this with a quote from one of my favorite movies:

As somebody once said, there's a difference between a failure and a fiasco. A failure is simply the non-present of success. Any fool can accomplish failure. But a fiasco, a fiasco is a disaster of mythic proportions. A fiasco is a folktale told to others, that makes other people feel more... alive. Because it didn't happen to them.

New Hair Color

DSC_0060

I finally had the courage to change my hair color. I like my natural hair color, but sometimes it can be a bit boring. And I wanted to have red hair since I was a teenager. And now that I have a hairdresser in the family it was time to risk it.

DSC_0071

What should I say, I was really nervous, but I love the outcome. The red will be a bit more vibrant with each coloring, but I think it looks so pretty now. Maybe now people will stop staring at me, because I am so pale.

Oh and by the way, can you believe that tomorrow will be the little one's second birthday? How time flies!

Happy New Year

If anybody still reads my blog, I wish you all a happy new year. This year I am really looking forward to the new year.

I am very sorry that I did not write an entry for this long. Life just got in my way. First the little one got a lot more active and I had to watch him more and more. He is now trying to stand while holding on to everything he can reach. It is so cute. He is such an active little guy and wants to discover everything. Only his toys he finds somehow boring, because he prefers to play with our stuff (preferably my smartphone, he likes to chew on it). In October he started kindergarten, so that I could continue my studies. I had hoped this would leave me some time for blogging and all the other stuff, but I did not count in all the illnesses he would bring home. I had a flu now three times in three months and some other health problems (I fear due to being to energetic after the flu). I tried to at least finish all the necessary stuff, but this was not blogging.

Taking photos was also difficult when you have a baby at home. And my outfits were more on the practical side, too. I even have three dresses and some new vintage items I did not show you, which I hope to do soon.

But there were also some really good moments the last months. I am happy each day that the little one is making good progress. He laughs so much and it is amazing to see his development. Babies change such a lot in such a short time. I can't believe that soon one year is over. But I am also looking forward to planning a party.

I discovered snail mailing again. I always had some pen pals for at least ten years, but this year I started to look for new ones. Now I have a lot of letters to answer and I feel a bit bad, it does take me so long, but it is also fun to write and receive letters. I am also researching calligraphy and lettering after seeing a lot of great pictures. And in November I participated in Snail Mail My Email, which was hard work, but also much fun.

Last year I fell in love with Doctor Who. Together with my boyfriend I watched almost all of the new seasons and we have now great insider jokes.

In September we were on holiday at the Baltic Sea. It was a great week and I felt so good be away from home after being at home so long. Really I was so happy when university started in October and I got out of the house. I think, I could never be a stay at home Mom. It is such not who I am. I love my little boy, but I need something else in my life too.

So, this were some updates on my life. We had a nice christmas only a bit shadowed by the flu and a good start into 2015. And now I am looking forward to the next twelve months being a Mom, reading, writing letters, crafting and hopefully sharing about all of this on this blog.

All the best wishes to you!

My Washi Tape

DSC_4002

Of course I could not resist the trend of washi tape. But they are so expensive! Fortunately I found some  affordable alternatives at Ikea and a local coffee shop (Tchibo) some while ago. Tchibo had some new tapes last month. I will show you these soon.

More Stamps

DSC_4001

Here are some more stamps I got a while ago. These are all acrylic stamps you stick on an acrylic block to use. The neat thing about these is, that you can see through the block and aim the stamps better. The set on the first photo is from a local shop here in Germany and the two sets on the second picture are from Studio L2E. The first are great for greeting cards and the second for planning.

Jill Barber

Some time ago I discovered Jill Barber through Bomb Girls. She has an amazing voice and I love her music. It is very 40s. And now that I enjoyed her CD while doing the washing up, I thought maybe I should share her music with you. So enjoy!

Stamps

Here are some stamp sets I got from easy a while ago. Before the birth of the little one I was in a bit of a stamp craze. Only to have them now and no time left to use them. Darn! But maybe in the near future.

Another kind of Blog Hop

Sorry, that this comes a bit late. I was not in blogging mode the last few weeks. But finally here is my post for the blog hop. I was tagged by Teresa from DaisiesforViolet.

The idea is to answer some questions and then tag three other bloggers to answer them too. So here we go:

Bloghop

What are you working on?

Too much. There are way too many things I started, working on actively or want to make. And there are not only sewing projects. Right now I am really into knitting and my queue on Ravelry is really long. At the moment I am knitting a cardigan and it is my first one and I am really really scared.

Then there is my new photo album for all the photos of the little one. I got the photos this week and now they lie here and want to be put into the album. And I fear the little one will be no big help with this. He thinks it is awful when Mama does not want to play with him 24 hours a day.

There are a tons of letters waiting to be answered. I am really sorry for my pen pals, because they get an answer after six or more months. One letter is in Russian. I am not sure if I manage to answer this in Russian or if I have to go with this in English (I don't think she will mind, but I started this to improve my Russian so it would be a shame).

I have a lot of ideas for blog posts, but don't get around to write them. I even have photos for some of them. I really don't know what hinders me than my own laziness.

And please don't get me started on my sewing and embroidery. I think I have more UFOs here than I can remember. Which does not hinder me to start new projects or buy new fabrics. Oops!

But all in all it could be worse. Even with the little one I got around to make some things which are waiting to be shown on the blog.

And I finished a book last weekend.

How does your work differ from others in its genre?

Because I work mostly from patterns I do not differ such a lot from others. Maybe I differ a bit from all the whole-time-crafters that I study and have a job and crafting is only a hobby for me. That is mostly the reason I don't want to work on my own patterns. I simply want something done and not be a master in anything. It should be fun to make and a nice result. That is all I am asking for.

Why do you write/create what you do?

Because it's fun to make something with my hands. And it is a nice change from all the work on the computer. In our modern world we rely too much on computers and technic. We can buy practically everything. So it is nice to make something by myself. I don't do this to save money (buying oftentimes is cheaper) or have a unique item. But simply because I enjoy the process and like the result.

Bloghop

How does your writing/creating process work?

Mostly it starts with a tutorial/pattern I find online and simply have to make. Sometimes I need something specific and search for a pattern. Pinterest is my big weakness. There are so many great ideas floating around. I could browse the site for hours.
Sometimes with knitting I search for projects I can handle but also where I can learn something new. You can't knit scarves all the time!
I am easily inspired. Which is a real problem. Sometimes I have to stop myself to not start another time consuming craft. Especially when I have free time (like right now) it is tempting to start something new. But when I then work again and have lessons everything lies here started and I grow frustrated.

To spread this blog hop a bit, I want to hand it over to some German bloggers:

Happy Mother's Day

Here in Germany today is Mother's Day so I wish all mothers all the best. Here are some cards I made for today:

The little one was not so thrilled when I tried to get his footprints, but I think they turned out okay. I hope the recipients will like the cards.

Oh, and if you read this, I love you Mom!

Scrapbook

Since I was a child I had to collect all kind of paper scraps that I found pretty or holt precious memories. Over the time I had quite a box full of these. So some while ago I decided to put these all in an album. Today I want to share some of the finished pages.

More Pens

DSC_3789

When I discovered that the Muji pens are missing some colors I bought these felt tipped pens at Etsy. And I think these are great for the price. The have a really fine tip and there are so many colors. But now I have enough pens to last me a while.

Muji Gel Pens

CSC_3802

Of course I had to have some fancy pens for my filofax and who makes better pens than the Japanese? So I bought this set of Muji gel pens.

DSC_3796

These pens are really expensive, especially when you have to order them from their website. I wish I had a store near me.

DSC_3794

The pens have a very thin tip and write really smoothly. I use the black one most often and like how it writes. What is a bit odd about this set is the choice of colors. You have several pink and blue ones, but no yellow or brown. This was not so clear on the website, so I was a bit disappointed when it arrived.

All in all the pens are nice, but I am not sure if they are worth the price. I would repurchase the black one alone, but only if I could buy it in a store. Unfortunately there are not many Muji stores in Germany.
